This academic competition begins on Tuesday, May 26, and runs through Thursday, May 29, and brings together top spellers from the United States and several other countries. This year’s bee featured 247 contestants from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., U.S. territories and multiple countries overseas. When the competition returns to the nation’s capital in 2026, the finals will be held at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
This year, the Bee will award more than $50,000 in cash and prizes to its champions, as well as other educational awards and sponsorship stipends.
according to Official Awards Structure Published by The Bee, the winner will receive:
- $50,000 cash prize awarded by Scripps National Spelling Bee
- Scripps Cup Championship Trophy
- A commemorative medal
- $2,500 cash prize and reference library from Merriam-Webster Dictionary
- Encyclopedia Britannica reference materials and three-year online membership
- $1,000 in Delta Air Lines flight credit
The finalists after the champion will also receive generous prizes. Second place will receive $25,000, third place will receive $15,000, fourth place will receive $10,000, fifth place will receive $5,000 and sixth place will receive $2,500. Spellers who do not advance to the first round of the finals will each receive $2,000.
Schools associated with the championship will also receive awards. The winner’s school will receive a commemorative plaque, a five-year subscription to News-O-Matic and $1,000 in academic dollars to purchase educational materials.
Bee rewards have changed dramatically over the decades. Early champions receive smaller cash prizes, savings bonds and educational trips. one Past Scripps Reports The 2016 co-champions each received $40,000 and additional bonuses.
