WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A man wanted in connection with a 2016 crash in Whatcom County that killed passenger Georgiana James has died in Guatemala, the Washington State Patrol said in a news release Wednesday.
WSP said Luciano Ailon-Garcia is wanted for vehicular homicide, hit-and-run fatality and vehicular assault following a crash on Pole Road on Aug. 28, 2016.
Investigators say Ailon-Garcia was driving a Ford Explorer on Pole Road around 5 a.m. when he was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to complete a left turn.
The SUV left the road, jumped about 80 feet, and came to rest in a raspberry field.
James was ejected from the car and died at the scene, WSP reported. The second passenger suffered broken ribs.
WSP said Aaron Garcia ran away from the accident and failed to care for the injured passengers.
A no-bail order was issued against him on March 21, 2017.
Aaron-Garcia later fled to Guatemala and evaded law enforcement for years, according to WSP. Investigators have now confirmed he is dead.
WSP said James’ family has been notified.
The agency said it was updating its wanted list Aaron Garcia’s death confirmed.
