A manufacturing fault could cause roof fragments on affected cars to crack and break off while driving.
WASHINGTON — Ford is recalling more than 16,000 Ford Bronco SUVs because the vehicles may have defective roofs that could send debris flying into traffic.
This recall includes vehicles Broncos were produced in two-door body styles between September 23, 2020 and January 13, 2022, and others in four-door body styles between September 23, 2020 and October 22, 2021.
The recall is due to concerns that the MIC hardtop on the SUV could crack and delaminate, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Such a failure could cause debris to fly from the roof shell while the car is in motion, possibly striking other vehicles.
Ford has recalled 15,045 vehicles from the 2021 model year and 1,155 vehicles from the 2022 model year. A total of 16,200 vehicles are covered by the recall, but the company estimates that only 5% actually have roof defects.
According to the recall report, the removable roofs of the affected cars were compromised during the production process due to issues with a third-party supplier and its equipment parameters.
“In severe cases, delamination may cause parts of the outer skin to peel off while driving,” the recall states.
Ford said it was aware of 25 warranty claims, two field reports and two customer complaints related to the vehicles in the United States as of March. No injuries or incidents were caused by this recall.
Customers can tell if their car is affected by a production issue simply by looking at it. In some cases, cracks or chips in the casing may be noticed, indicating that environmental damage has compromised the roof. In some cases, drivers will hear greater wind noise while driving due to the lack of roof covering.
Ford says it will replace the faulty hardtop for free. The company plans to mail notification letters to affected Bronco owners by November 5, 2026. Any driver who suspects their car may be included in the recall can call an authorized dealer for inspection. Search their VIN on the NHTSA website Or call the Ford Hotline at 1-866-436-7332.
