Tesla crashes into pond on Autopilot, killing 87-year-old driver: Florida Highway Patrol

The Florida Highway Patrol said the accident occurred when an 87-year-old man was driving a Tesla Model Y SUV that was operating on Autopilot.

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — An 87-year-old Florida man died after his Tesla in Autopilot mode left the road and entered a pond, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. WTSP report.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the Wesley Chapel man was driving a Tesla Model Y SUV on Autopilot on Pasco County Overpass Road around 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

At some point, police said, the Tesla ran off the road, hit an electrical box and continued driving until it was submerged in a pond.

The man was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries. His passenger, a 75-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s unclear what exactly caused the crash.

The names of the driver and passenger have not been released.
