An implosion reportedly killed several people at the Nippon Dynawave plant in Longview, which produces paper and packaging products.
Longview, Washington—A Chemical tank implosion A fire broke out at the Nippon Dynawave plant in Longview Tuesday morning, killing and injuring several people.
At approximately 7:18 a.m., a liquid supply tank containing hazardous “chemical treatment products” ruptured, causing multiple burns and exposing others to hazardous chemicals. Around 11:20 a.m., officials confirmed multiple deaths and serious injuries related to the incident.

The Nippon Dynawave plant houses a kraft pulp and paper mill as well as multiple liquid packaging plants and employs approximately 1,000 people. Liquid packaging paperboard is commonly used for beverage containers such as milk and juice cartons, but due to its strength it can be used in other applications as well. Wet pulp and sludge are products used in papermaking.
According to Nippon’s website, its products are processed into 8 billion single-serve containers each year. The factory has been operating since 1953 and is a subsidiary of Nippon Paper Group.
