Firefighters removed a mantel and opened a wall and were able to free one suspect without causing injuries, authorities said.
EVERETT, Wash. — An Everett police officer requested the assistance of firefighters to extricate a suspect who was trapped in a chimney, police said.
Everett Police Department officers responded to the 1300 block of Broadway Avenue around 8:40 a.m. after neighbors reported smoke coming from a boarded-up house with a no-trespassing sign.
Investigators said the suspect refused to leave the building. As officers attempted to enter through the front door, a man described by police as an intruder climbed out of a second-story window, onto the roof and into the still-smoking chimney, where he became trapped, police said.
Officers called the Everett Fire Department as the incident required rescue.
After removing the smoldering debris from the fireplace, the suspect refused assistance and moved further down the chimney, police said.
Firefighters later removed the mantel and opened the wall, successfully freeing the suspect without causing any injuries, authorities said.
Police arrested the suspect on unspecified charges and transported him to Providence Hospital for evaluation.
