WASHINGTON — The man who opened fire near the White House on Saturday was killed by law enforcement, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
Just after 6 p.m., a man near a White House security checkpoint pulled a weapon from his bag and began shooting. according to a press release issued by the Secret Service.
The suspect, 21-year-old Nasire Best, was shot during a confrontation with Secret Service agents and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. ET and a bystander was shot. They were listed in critical condition on Saturday.
President Donald Trump was at the White House when the shooting occurred, but authorities said no one was affected and no law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.
This is the third shooting near the president in a month.
The White House went into temporary lockdown, which has now been lifted.
Best has had at least two previous run-ins with law enforcement, according to court documents, and has reportedly faced mental health challenges.
According to District of Columbia court records, Best was arrested in July 2025 after he attempted to enter another White House checkpoint without authorization, disobeyed police orders to stop, “claimed to be Jesus Christ” and expressed a desire to be arrested.
A preliminary hearing was held and a “pretrial stay away order” was issued, which is typically a measure ordering a defendant to stay away from a person or area until trial. In August, a bench warrant was issued following a “non-compliance” notice against Best, who did attend a subsequent hearing.
