WASHINGTON — Rob Base, a member of Harlem rap duo Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, has died after a battle with cancer. He is 59 years old.
Base died just four days after his 59th birthday. His death was confirmed on Friday and a statement was released about him. social media.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip-hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 22, 2026 after a private battle with cancer. 💔,” read a statement shared on his official Instagram. “Rob’s music, energy and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Off the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”
“Thank you for the music, the memories and the moments that became the soundtrack of our lives,” the statement continued. “Rest in Heaven, Rob Bass.”
Base is best known for the 1980s hit “It Takes Two,” which became a cult classic. It has been sampled by Snoop Dogg, the Black Eyed Peas, and used in films such as Iron Man 2 and The Proposal.
Base’s real name is Robert Ginyard, born on May 18, 1967. He met his music partner EZ Rock when he was in fifth grade.
