
After eleven seasons, Stephen Colbert will host CBS’ “The Late Show” for the final time on Thursday.
NEW YORK — Ahead of Stephen Colbert’s final episode of “The Late Show,” celebrities and politicians took to social media to congratulate him on his past 11 years of late-night work.
CBS announced last summer that Colbert’s show would be ending, citing financial reasons. Plans for the finale were not revealed in advance. Colbert’s main competition is ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” will all air reruns Thursday night to coincide with the farewell to Colbert.
Reactions and congratulations poured in from Democratic politicians, including former president joe bidenformer U.S. Senator and First Lady Hillary ClintonU.S. Representative. Nancy Pelosi and former transportation minister Pete Buttigieg.
“Not many people can make people think and laugh at the same time,” Biden said. “Stephen has brought wisdom, heart and honesty to late-night television for years. America can always count on a laugh — and sometimes a reality check. Congratulations on your incredible success, my friend.”
Fallon posted Baret Boisson’s artwork on Instagram and quoted a line from the film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: “There are some good things in the world, and Mr. Frodo… is worth fighting for.” Colbert is known to be a huge fan of JRR Tolkien’s work and will co-create a new “Lord of the Rings” movie.
Kimmel posted a photo of herself and Colbert on the set of “The Late Show,” saying: “Tonight we congratulate our friend Stephen @Colbert and his writers, staff and crew for eleven years of excellence. Watch Colbert’s finale tonight and never watch CBS again.”
Comedian and “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart simply posted: “My brother.”
Comedy troupe “Second City” looked back at Colbert’s box office career in 1987.
Actor Mark Hamill said: “I can’t thank Stephen Colbert enough for all the laughter he’s given us over the decades. He’s been so proactive in providing therapy during this difficult time, and I can’t wait to see what he does next!”
