Starting July 1, leashed pets will officially be allowed in Washington state ferry cabins

Under the new rules, pets will be allowed in a marked area in the cabin opposite the galley.

EDMONDS, Wash. — Washington State Ferries is updating its pet policy to allow leashed pets in cabins.

Under the new rules, pets will be allowed in a marked area in the cabin opposite the galley. The new rules take effect on July 1.

this The new rules were developed after a six-month trial last year.

Pets are also allowed on the vehicle deck and outdoor passenger areas.

Before the rules take effect, Washington State Ferries will conduct a six-week education and transition period to help passengers understand the changes. By July 1, signs will be installed showing where pets are allowed and where pets are prohibited.

Pet waste stations will also be added to help ensure people clean up after their animals.

“Our updated pet policy builds on a trial that began last summer when pets were allowed in most passenger areas except galleys and indoor seating,” said Steve Nevey, WSDOT’s WSF deputy secretary. “We listened to our employees and customers. Some supported the trial, while others expressed concerns about cleanliness, safety and enforcement. This updated policy strikes a balance by allowing pets in certain areas while addressing those concerns.”

If the pet is uncontrolled or not cleaned up, the crew may tell the owner to move the pet to the vehicle deck or outdoor area.

Service animals are allowed in all areas.

Livestock will be required to remain in appropriate enclosures.
