Information about Avis offering customers up to $5,000 data breach settlement

Customers affected by the 2024 breach have until June 21 to file claims for damages or cash payments related to their exposed personal information.

WASHINGTON — Customers affected by the 2024 Avis Budget Group data breach can receive up to $5,000 in damages related to the incident, under a new rule. settlement.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit alleging that hackers accessed customers’ personal information during a security incident that occurred between August 3 and August 6, 2024.

Exposed information may include customer names, driver’s license information, credit card numbers and expiration dates, dates of birth and phone numbers, according to the settlement website.

Avis denied wrongdoing but agreed to a proposed settlement to resolve the lawsuit.

The settlement applies to U.S. residents whose personal information was compromised in this breach. Eligible customers can submit a claim for reimbursement of documented out-of-pocket costs related to the breach, including fraud or identity theft charges, up to $5,000.

Customers with no recorded losses are still eligible for cash payments from the settlement fund. Following payment of fees and reimbursement, these amounts will be distributed equally among approved claimants.

Claims must be submitted online or postmarked by June 21, the settlement administrator said.

A final court hearing is scheduled for July 28 in New Jersey federal court.
