Hyundai Motor is recalling 54,000 vehicles due to overheating risks. View affected models

The recall covers Elantra Hybrid models from 2024 to 2026.

WASHINGTON — More than 54,000 Hyundai vehicles are being recalled due to an increased risk of fire.

National Transportation and Highway Safety Administration Issue a recall notice May 15, 2024 to 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid models. The car’s electrical control unit is responsible for delivering power to specific components of the hybrid system, but it can overheat under “high electrical loads.”

NHTSA says that in most cases, the car may enter a “no-start” state, or it may enter a “limp” mode with reduced power. The recall notice states that in rare cases, overheating may cause thermal damage to the power unit assembly and other internal components.

Overheating of the power unit may increase the risk of fire.

According to the notification, the power unit software may not be able to provide adequate cooling to unit components, resulting in overheating. Safety regulators say an estimated 1% of recalled cars are defective.

Hyundai vehicles are known to have been involved in four accidents, one of which resulted in a fire. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this recall.

Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified by mail to take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer, where technicians will update the HPCU software. The recall says the remedy will be free to all owners of affected vehicles, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered by Hyundai’s new vehicle limited warranty.

In addition, Hyundai will reimburse owners of affected vehicles for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain remedies for the recall conditions based on a reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on March 2, 2026.

Notification letters are scheduled to be sent on July 13, 2026.
