WASHINGTON – Memorial Day will be held on Monday, May 25, 2026.

This federal holiday honors the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Although it is a sad day for many who have lost loved ones, communities often mark the day with ceremonies or parades, and it is considered the “unofficial start of summer.”

To celebrate the holiday, schools, banks, government offices and other services will be closed nationwide. While many stores will remain open with adjusted hours, others will close entirely.

Normally Federal holiday statusin observance of Memorial Day, the U.S. Postal Service will not be delivering mail on Monday, May 25.

Post offices across the United States will be closed for the holidays.

USPS will reopen post offices and resume regular deliveries on Tuesday, May 26.

What is Memorial Day?

For decades, the holiday was celebrated on May 30. until In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This made it a federal holiday and was instead celebrated on the last Monday in May.

The holiday originated a few years after the Civil War Originally called Decoration Day.

In the United States, the purpose is anniversary is to honor fallen military personnel, and Veterans Day honors veterans who have served their country.

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th.
