Countdown to kickoff: Seattle volunteers prepare for global spotlight

As Seattle prepares for the World Cup, nearly 2,000 volunteers are ready to greet fans and bring the global event to life.

With just over three weeks to go before the FIFA World Cup kicks off, host cities across North America are making final preparations — including Seattle, where stadium upgrades and volunteer efforts are ramping up.

Seattle is one of several host cities, along with Mexico City, Toronto and Vancouver, preparing to welcome fans from around the world. While the venue is being put to the final touches, those behind the scenes are already getting into action.

“We want to make sure everyone who comes to Seattle feels a sense of warmth and hospitality,” said Hana Tadesse. Seattle 2026 FIFA World Cup organizing team. “For a world-class event, you have to be a world-class city — and we have some world-class volunteers. I’m really excited for the world to see Seattle.”

On Wednesday, organizers introduced some of the volunteers who will help run six games in the Emerald City.

For many, this opportunity is deeply personal.

“Participating in the FIFA World Cup is a dream come true,” said volunteer Annabel Borromeo.

“Hosting this event in your host city – my hometown – is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” added volunteer Thomas Bobson. “This is a great opportunity to get involved, see what’s going on behind the scenes and help Seattle look better.”

For the past 10 days, volunteers have been reporting to Seattle’s World Cup headquarters in Pioneer Square to receive official FIFA gear, including uniforms, jackets, shoes, hats and cross-body bags designed for the global stage.

“It’s very colorful – it really speaks to FIFA and the World Cup,” Borromeo said.

Bobson added that the gear will be a lasting memory. “This is something I can share with my family and pass on.”

Seattle FWC26 partners with Washington Youth Soccer to coordinate the Seattle Host City Volunteer Program, overseeing recruitment, training and event operations through a four-phase process. Washington Youth Football manages volunteers from initial recruitment to field deployment during games.

Interest in volunteering is high. More than 35,000 people in Seattle applied, but only about 5 percent (about 2,000 volunteers) were selected.

Volunteers will assist visitors in high-traffic areas, including Pioneer Square, the waterfront, Seattle Soccer Stadium at Pacific Place and local organizing committee stadium area booths, as well as help welcome and register qualified guests at the International Media Center and Volunteer Center.

“Get the email, pass the background check, and get involved,” Bobson said. “Very interesting.”

Volunteers will be stationed throughout the city during matches – from transport hubs and fan zones to stadium gates – often the first point of contact for visitors.

“I think it’s going to be crazy,” Bobson said. “You’ve seen it on TV before, but it’s never happened here. It’s awesome to see this energy in our own backyard.”

Seattle’s first World Cup match is scheduled for June 15, between Belgium and Egypt.

Fans may also notice a temporary name change: in compliance with FIFA’s non-sponsorship rules, Lumen Arena will be known as “Seattle Stadium” during matches.
