The video, recorded by a 14-year-old Barrington Middle School student, has been viewed and shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media. The student and his mother said the incident left students shocked and emotionally shaken.
“She took the charger cord and wrapped it around the baby’s neck and tied it,” said Noah, the student who recorded the video. “She tried multiple times to get it above the TV and once she succeeded, she lowered it so it could be seen underneath the TV.”
Noah said students’ initial reaction was nervous laughter, and then the mood in the classroom quickly changed.
“Everyone started telling her it was wrong and racist,” he said. “Then she said it was just a joke and she took the doll off.”
The now-viral video shows teacher Karen Whitmire Savage, 63, using wires to hang the doll from a TV monitor while her students watched.
Noah said he felt compelled to record everything he saw.
“When she put it down, I thought, I think I should record it so I have more evidence that she did it,” he said. “I need more evidence so she doesn’t get away with it.”
He later reported the incident to school administrators. Noah said Savage followed him to the student affairs office and spoke to him as he tried to explain what happened.
“It’s really disturbing,” he said. “I hope she is no longer allowed to teach. Because if she did something like that, she shouldn’t be allowed to teach.”
Noah’s mother, Nina Williams, said she went into a “panic” after seeing the video her son sent to a family group chat while he was at school.
“My heart started racing,” Williams said. “I immediately went into panic. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have to go get my son.'”
Williams said she is still shocked by what students witnessed in the classroom.
“I’m still in shock,” she said. “I kept looking at it and I just couldn’t remember it. I was trying to figure out where her mind was at.”
Williams said the photo immediately brought to mind America’s history of racial violence and lynching.
“I don’t want my children to see something like this in 2026 – a lynching, real or fake,” Williams said. “The whole picture is horrific.”
She said the incident emotionally affected students of multiple racial and cultural backgrounds and feared the memory would stay with them for years to come.
“It’s something they’ll never forget,” Williams said. “This will be with my son for the rest of his life.”
Williams also said she has been contacted by civil rights attorneys and is considering legal action against the district.
“Yes, I have some attorneys, civil rights attorneys and some people that I’ve been in contact with,” she said. “Things are going on.”
Reaction was swift online, with many social media users calling for Savage to be sacked, while others suggested the incident may have been taken out of context. Savage’s personal social media page describes her as a mother, grandmother and longtime educator, calling her teaching a “gift and passion.”
In a full statement released Thursday, Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Van Ayres condemned the behavior and confirmed that the teacher involved has been removed from campus while the district investigates:
“I am aware that an inappropriate and highly offensive display occurred in a Barrington Middle School classroom yesterday. The content of the display was unacceptable and does not reflect our school community or my values as superintendent, and will not be tolerated. When school administrators were informed, they took immediate action and referred the matter to the district’s Office of Professional Standards. The staff member involved has been removed from the school.
We are committed to creating a caring, supportive learning environment where every student feels respected, valued and safe. We recognize that incidents such as this cause concern for students, families and the wider community.
Please know that I take this matter very seriously and will continue to address this issue with transparency and urgency. “
Williams said she applauds the district’s quick response so far but believes Savage should never return to the classroom.
“I’m very grateful for their quick action in removing her from the building,” she said. “I do appreciate it. I pray she never goes back to another school in any county in any state.”
