James Roscoe, one of Britain’s most senior diplomats in the United States, has resigned as deputy chief of mission at the British embassy in the US capital.According to the BBC, Foreign Office officials confirmed that Roscoe had “left” but did not provide any further details about his departure.Roscoe will also serve as Charge d’Affaires to the United States from September 2025 to February 2026, temporarily leading the embassy during a critical period in UK-US diplomatic relations.Before moving to Washington, Roscoe represented the UK at the United Nations General Assembly and later held senior communications roles within the UK government, including roles in the Cabinet Office and the Brexit Department.He is also known for serving as correspondence secretary to Queen Elizabeth II from 2013 to 2016.Earlier in his career, Roscoe served as chief press officer to former British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street.While in Washington, Roscoe played a role in major diplomatic engagements, including arrangements related to former US President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK and Charles III’s recent visit to the US.His early diplomatic assignments also included positions with the United Nations, Sierra Leone and Iraq.
