LONDON, UK – HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” The show is about to enter its second season, and the cast has also undergone changes.
Young actress Gracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley, will not return for the show’s next installment and the character will be recast. Cochran and her family announced her departure in a joint statement, citing “unforeseen circumstances.”
They said: “Her time spent in the world of Harry Potter was truly wonderful and she is extremely grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience.”
HBO expressed support in its own statement. An HBO spokesperson said: “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to star in the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we thank her for her work on the show’s first season. We wish Gracie and her family the best.”
The news comes as production on season one is wrapping up. The first season will premiere on Christmas 2026, with the second season set to go into production this fall.
The character only appeared briefly in J.K. Rowling’s first novel, as she was not yet old enough to enter Hogwarts.
However, Ginny becomes a central character in the second book and later becomes Harry’s main love interest. In the second season of “Chamber of Secrets”, Ginny opened a secret room in Hogwarts Castle and, under the influence of Tom Riddle’s magical diary, unknowingly released a ferocious basilisk and ordered it to attack the students. Tom Riddle was a student at Hogwarts who grew up to become Lord Voldemort, the series’ main villain.
It’s the first major rewrite of the HBO series, which cast its child actors from tens of thousands of entries. No replacement has been announced yet. Bonnie Wright played Ginny in all eight films of the original Harry Potter film series.
Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stott as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley respectively. The show’s cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Papa Isidu as Severus Snape and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.
