Kyle Wayland Cathcart, who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, faces charges that he staged his wife’s stabbing to look like a burglary.

On May 1, King County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a burglary and fatal stabbing in the 25000 block of 186th Place South in Covington.
According to charging documents, Cathcart previously claimed to receive a $6 million lawsuit settlement on the day of the stabbing. Prosecutors said Cathcart later claimed he lied to his family about the cost of the lawsuit and reportedly killed his wife to avoid being confronted about his lies.
Cathcart said in an interview that he and his wife have two pending civil lawsuits and will pay about $61 million in damages.
Cathcart is accused of stabbing his wife at least 48 times in an incident in which the couple’s children were inside the home, and then trying to disguise the killing as a burglary.

Cathcart allegedly told investigators that an intruder wearing dark clothing attacked the couple at their Covington home. Detectives later said surveillance video showed someone leaving the house, but no one entered.
Previous court documents said investigators found blood-stained clothing in a neighbor’s yard and evidence that someone familiar with the house’s garage code could have walked through the house without appearing on a Ring camera.
Detectives said Cathcart later admitted to killing his wife with a kitchen knife and trying to make the killing look like a robbery.
