Bullets hit home near newborn’s home in North Seattle, family demands action

A North Seattle father was documenting a series of shootings around his home, with bullets ripping into his home just feet from his baby’s bassinet.

SEATTLE — A bullet ripped into the side of a North Seattle home this month and came to rest just feet from the bassinet of a six-week-old baby.

Families living in Seattle’s Aurora corridor neighborhood are demanding action after a series of shootings in the neighborhood.

Neighbors in the Greenwood neighborhood say nighttime gunfire has become a recurring problem in the area. Residents documented multiple shootings involving dozens of shell casings, damaged vehicles and bullets hitting homes.

“It’s not enough,” resident Jack said of the city’s response. “Our community feels like collateral damage. It’s just a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.”

Jack, who asked that his last name be withheld, said surveillance cameras captured gunfire erupting near his home near North 98th Street and Linden Avenue North around 4:24 a.m. on May 16. He said more than 20 shell casings were scattered on the street after the incident, and the bullets struck the home near his bedroom, where his young son was sleeping.

“The bullets went through the siding of my house,” Jack said. “His cradle is right under the window.”

Residents said the May 16 shooting was one of several recent incidents in the community. Jack and other neighbors have compiled videos, photos and incident numbers that they say document at least eight shootings within about 10 blocks of their homes in the past month.

Events tracked by neighbors include:

  • On April 23, residents reported more than a dozen gunshots near North 107th Street and Aurora Avenue North.
  • On May 3, residents reported finding more than 25 shell casings near North 107th Street and Linden Avenue North.
  • On May 7, residents reported eight to 15 shootings near North 100 Street between Aurora and Linden.
  • On May 17, neighbors reported shots fired from a vehicle near North 97th and 98th Streets along Linden Avenue North.
  • Earlier on May 18, two other shootings were reported near North 97th Street and Aurora Avenue North and near North 101st Street and Linden Avenue North.

Jack and several neighbors believe much of the violence is related to prostitution-related activity along Aurora Avenue and spilling over into nearby residential streets.

Another resident, Peter Orr, said his children found a dozen shell casings near a bus stop after one of the shootings.

“When they can’t get away from each other, they come into our community and bring it here,” Orr said.

Data made public through the Seattle Police Department shows Greenwood has recorded fewer shooting calls this year compared to the same period in 2025. Police data reviewed by KING 5 shows that as of May 17, five shooting calls were recorded, compared to 13 during the same period last year.

Seattle police said the shooting remains under investigation.

“The Seattle Police Department understands the concerns of residents in the area,” Seattle police spokesman Sergeant Patrick Michaud said in a statement. “The department is actively patrolling Aurora as time and call volume allow. The shooting remains an active investigation, but if there is a connection, we will make a determination as the situation progresses.”

Jack said he spent weeks sending emails to police, council members, the mayor’s office and state lawmakers while documenting the shooting in hopes of drawing more attention to the violence near his neighborhood.

“We’ve been in shock since this happened,” Jack said, “but we haven’t even had a moment to calm down.”
