Israel says it has killed the leader of the Hamas military group who was one of the masterminds of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war in Gaza.
The Israeli military said Izz al-Din Haddad was killed in an attack in Gaza City on Friday. He was one of the last senior commanders in the Hamas military to command the planning and execution of the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7.
Israeli officials said Haddad took over the post after the killing of his predecessor, Mohammad Sinwar. Haddad’s family confirmed his death to The Associated Press on Saturday.
His killing comes as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains fragile as key issues such as Hamas’ disarmament hamper progress on the deal.
