Pike Place Market is one step closer to a “Drink and Stroll” program that will allow visitors to enjoy alcoholic beverages while exploring the market over the weekend.
SEATTLE — Visitors to Pike Place Market can explore parts of the market this summer while sipping a beer, wine or cocktail, following a proposal from leaders. “Drink and Stroll” pilot scheme.
The Pike Place Market Historical Commission approved the plan at its meeting Wednesday night.
The pilot project requires approval from the Seattle Department of Transportation and the Pike Place Market Public Development Authority Board of Directors to take effect. The PDA’s next meeting will be held on May 28, and a Pike Place Market spokesman said the progress of the plan will be clearer after the meeting.
Under the proposal, the pilot would run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. However, the pilot program may not begin on Memorial Day given the approved timeline, the spokesperson said.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, attendees are free to “drink and stroll” from noon to 4:30 p.m. The opening hours of the World Night Market on June 18 will be extended to 8 pm.
In addition to allowing outdoor alcohol service, the plan will also close the road through the market to vehicular traffic during designated hours.
Drinks will be served in specific cups created for the program, and anyone purchasing a drink will be identified and given a wristband.
The beverages would be allowed in designated public seating areas and walkways but would not be brought into businesses other than where they were purchased, the proposal said.

The proposal says the boundaries of areas where alcohol is allowed will be marked with signage and floor medallions.
