This concert is a first for FIFA.
WASHINGTON — The World Cup final will feature a star-studded halftime show headlined by Madonna, Shakira and boy band BTS.
FIFA announced that the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host a Super Bowl-style concert for the first time.
The governing body said the show will support the FIFA Global Citizenship Education Fund, which is raising $100 million to help children access education and play football.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said it would “bring music and football together on the biggest stage in sport for a very special cause.”
“Every child deserves the chance to achieve their dreams, and together we can help make that happen,” he posted on Instagram in a video that also featured Elmo from “Sesame Street” and Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
Martin will curate the show.
The Super Bowl is famous for its halftime show, which attracts spectacular performances from the world’s biggest stars. This year’s star is Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny.
Previous headliners include Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Prince, Bruce Springsteen and Rihanna.
But half-time performances are not common in football, with pre-match concerts held at events such as the Champions League final. This year, the Hitmen will headline European club football’s biggest match between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal in Budapest.
FIFA described its half-time show as “a unique moment where sport, culture and purpose meet, broadcast live around the world.”
This year’s World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be held in June and July.
