The student was later identified as Alex, a 13-year-old seventh-grader at Ringgold Middle School in Catoosa County.
According to the woman’s granddaughter Morgan, her grandmother was eating alone on a school trip around 3pm when Alex came up to her table and asked her if she was alone.
When she told him she was, he responded, “Well, you’re not eating alone now.”
Instead of sitting with his classmate, Alex spent the rest of lunch chatting with her.
Morgan later shared the interaction online while trying to identify the student, describing him as a “curly-haired seventh grader” from Georgia traveling with a group of seventh and eighth graders, possibly to Washington, D.C.
“By 2026, behavior like this should be award-winning,” Morgan wrote. “Those parents deserve all the credit in the world.”
After the story spread online, Alex was identified as the man behind it.
His family said he had long been fascinated by people’s stories and examples of compassion. They said he enjoyed studying U.S. history, especially World War II, and revered Desmond Doss, the combat medic famous for saving dozens of soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa.
Alex’s parents said they were surprised by the attention the story received but not surprised by their son’s compassion for strangers.
The woman’s family said the interaction left a lasting impact, adding that the grandmother had been on “cloud nine” since the lunch conversation.
