A Washington, D.C., school bus driver won $5 million in the Maryland lottery and plans how to spend some of it.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A school bus driver in Washington, D.C., celebrates Win $5 million in Maryland Lottery.
Maurice Williams stopped at a 7-Eleven in Hyattsville, Maryland on his way to work to claim his $50 bonus. He used his winnings to buy another lottery ticket and then played in his car.
“I didn’t initially notice I had a matching number until I scanned it,” Williams told reporters Maryland Lottery. “It’s crazy because the matching number is 59 and I just turned 59 the other day.”
He said he learned he had won the LUXE game’s top prize when he scanned the scratch-off ticket.
“I just sat there, I mean, I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I have to get my head right.”
The first thing he did was call his mother. After sharing the exciting news and calming down, he went back to work. During his lunch break, he made an appointment to receive his award.
While Williams has yet to decide where to spend his newfound wealth, he does know one thing for sure. He wants to buy a house for his mother.
Williams wasn’t the only big winner. The 7-Eleven in Hyattsville that sells the ticket will receive a $5,000 bonus.
Lottery officials said the LUXE scratch-off event launched in February and awarded three grand prizes worth $5 million, with Morris winning the first prize and two more prizes still outstanding.
