EL PASO, Texas — A “Ted Russo” actor is moving from Playing football in a fictional club Play on a real professional football field.
Cristo Fernández, who plays the cheerful Dani Rojas in “Ted Lasso,” is officially a professional football player. Fernandez signed with El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL Champions League, The team announced Tuesday.
According to the club, the 35-year-old Fernandez has been on trial with the team for two months, during which he trained and even participated in a pre-season game earlier this year.
“Crystal is a great addition to our lineup, adding another offensive threat to our forward line,” Locomotives head coach Junior Gonzalez said. “His passion for the game and leadership of our locker room allows us to continue to develop the positive culture we strive for as a club.”
Fernandez started playing football as a teenager and quit due to injury in his late teens.
“Football has always been a big part of my life and identity, and no matter where life took me, the dream of playing professionally never really left my heart,” Fernandez said. “I am extremely grateful to the El Paso Locomotives – the club, the coaches, the staff, and especially my teammates – for opening the door for me and giving me the opportunity to play from day one. The journey back to professional football is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams, no matter how unexpected the road. ¡Vamos Locos!”
According to Tuesday’s announcement, terms of the deal will not be disclosed in line with club policy.
