
Travelers will face higher gas prices this Memorial Day weekend, the highest since the summer of 2022.

The organization’s travel forecast shows a slight increase in domestic travel this year, which could set a new Memorial Day weekend record, with 39.1 million people expected to drive and 3.66 million expected to fly.
Americans will likely be at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and 25.
“Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, a three-day weekend for most Americans,” Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. “Travel demand remains strong, with many people prioritizing leisure travel during the holidays despite rising fuel prices.”
Last Memorial Day, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.17. On Monday, the national average price in the United States was $4.52. Global natural gas prices have soared since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Conflict and subsequent wars in the region have led to instability in the region, which is an important part of the global oil market.
The U.S. and Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of oil passes, has been one of the biggest disruptions to global oil markets.

California is followed by the other Pacific Coast states, Washington ($5.762), Hawaii ($5.650), Oregon ($5.320) and Alaska ($5.264).
