An explosion occurred on board a charter boat in Biscayne Bay near Haulover Sands, injuring passengers, according to preliminary information provided by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the incident occurred around 12:30 pm ET near the Haulover Sandbar, a popular tourist attraction. At least 25 units responded to the area.
It’s unclear what caused the injuries, but at least 15 people were taken to hospital. nbc news reported. The Associated Press reported that a total of 11 people were injured. The age of the injured is not yet known, but miami herald At least one child was reportedly injured.
local specialty store WPLG Reports said a captain suspected the explosion was caused by a gas leak. He told the media that the incident happened while starting his business, calling it the “scariest moment” of his life.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
Located off the coast of North Miami, Haulover Sandbar is a shallow water boating area and tourist attraction where many parties are held.
