The largest ruby ever discovered was mined in the same area in 1996, but officials say the more recent discovery is believed to be more valuable.
WASHINGTON – Miners in Myanmar have unearthed a massive 11,000-carat ruby.
according to Myanmar Global New LightThe ruby was discovered in mid-April, state media reported. The report was submitted to Myanmar officials and analyzed before the country’s president on Thursday.
The rough gemstone is described as having a purplish-red hue with slight yellow undertones, a high color grade, moderate transparency, and a reflective surface.
It weighs approximately 4.8 pounds and weighs 11,000 carats, making it the second largest discovery by weight. Four of the world’s largest rubies were mined in the same area of Mogok town.
Myanmar produces 90% of the world’s rubies, mainly from the Mogok and Mongsu regions.
The largest ruby was discovered in 1996 and weighed 21,450 carats and 9.45 pounds, but experts say the newly discovered rubies are considered more valuable because of their exceptional color and quality.
The quality of a ruby is determined by its color, cut, clarity and carat weight. All of these factors will affect a gemstone’s value, but the gem’s origin may also be taken into consideration.
