He further confirmed that Dhoni topped the list of individual taxpayers in both states.“Ms Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer in the combined states of Bihar and Jharkhand last financial year,” Rao said, declining to reveal the exact amount of tax paid by the former India skipper.Jharkhand contributes major shareaccording to income tax departmentJharkhand alone contributes nearly 60% of the combined tax revenue of these two states. Officials said around 70 per cent of the total revenue comes from tax deducted at source (TDS).Among corporates, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and CMPDI are among the highest tax payers.Officials admitted that mining activities in Jharkhand were affected by heavy rainfall during the current financial year, thus impacting the revenue figures.“In the last fiscal year, mining activities were affected to some extent due to heavy rains, which affected tax collection. We hope that the tax collection will cross the Rs 20,000-crore mark this fiscal,” Rao said.Only 4 million documents returnedThe department also revealed a significant gap between PAN card holders and active taxpayers in the district.There are nearly 5.5 crore PAN card holders in Bihar and Jharkhand and only about 40 lakh people currently file income tax returns.
