Expressing concern over ongoing conflicts around the world, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Kingston, India, has made a very important contribution to overall global economic growth during a “very uncertain and unpredictable” period.
“We are seeing a level of turbulence, volatility and unpredictability that probably most of us have never experienced in our lives,” Jaishankar said in a speech at the University of the West Indies in Kingston on Monday.
He said that in a “very, very uncertain, unpredictable economic period and economic environment”, India is “actually a very important contributor to overall global economic growth today”.
“The International Monetary Fund estimates that if you look at total world economic growth this year, India will contribute 17 per cent, which I think will make us the second largest contributor,” he said.
He said that “political realities” are “very sensitive to the movement of people”, so global competence centers are becoming the only solution for “the transfer of economic tasks to where the people are”.
“India has become the leader of the GCC economy in many ways. Currently, we have about 1,800 GCC countries with exports approaching $70 billion a year and growing very, very fast,” he added.
Jaishankar said the transforming world “unfortunately looks more self-centered”.
In such situations, “countries tend to take care of themselves in some extreme way,” he said.
He said that India is showing the transforming world that “national interests and global interests are not inconsistent” and “even while taking care of yourself, you can contribute to the world.”
Jaishankar arrived in Kingston on Saturday as the first leg of his nine-day visit to Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago to further strengthen India’s strategic and cultural ties with Caribbean countries.
