How to teach listening

For example, teachers can hold debates and require students to restate their peers’ arguments to their satisfaction before offering criticism. This approach creates an environment in which equitable participation is a structural expectation rather than an afterthought, and disagreements are viewed as opportunities for understanding rather than winning.

The same principle applies outside of live discussions. Students can be asked to listen to a podcast, watch a video, or read an article with one task in mind: Can you fairly explain its argument before deciding whether to agree or disagree?

These are not just classroom exercises. They are a preview of democratic life.

These habits can also be developed outside of formal education. Before responding to something that irritates you, pause long enough to ask if you understand the real argument.

Before criticizing a position, restate the position in terms recognized by its holder. Separate what a person says from your assumptions about why they said it. These are small tweaks, but practiced consistently, they will change the quality of your exchange.

A democracy that only teaches people free speech only accomplishes half the job. In ancient Greece, the marketplace was not a stage.
