Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji’s love story:
Zohran Mamdani made history as the first Muslim and first South Asian mayor of New York City. And, the youngest in more than a century. With his victory, his personal life has also come into focus, particularly his marriage to Syrian-American artist Rama Duaji.
The two met in 2021 in one of the most modern ways – through Hinge. As Mamdani once described, their relationship progressed slowly, with them first exchanging messages and eventually meeting each other. “There’s still hope for these dating apps,” Mamdani once joked while sharing his love story on a podcast.
When they met, Mamdani was slowly establishing himself in local politics, while Duwaj, who grew up partly in Dubai, was busy developing an artistic career.
Initially, their relationship was kept secret, but after Mamdani’s political career came into focus, the couple made frequent public appearances. However, she still maintains a fairly low profile.
Eventually, they got engaged in 2024 and held their wedding (nikah) in Dubai. They reportedly held a closed ceremony on the rooftop of Vida Creek Harbor overlooking the Burj Khalifa. They then held a civil ceremony in early 2025 at the New York City Clerk’s Office. Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji also held a three-day wedding in Uganda.
