Greek police on Tuesday arrested an 89-year-old man accused of carrying out two shootings in Athens that injured at least four people, authorities said. The suspect was detained in the port city of Patras, about 200 kilometers west of the capital, after being on the run for several hours. The Associated Press quoted state broadcaster ERT as reporting that he was tracked to a hotel near a bus station and found to be armed. The shooting was allegedly sparked by dissatisfaction over pension payments and the suspect was also believed to have psychological problems, AFP reported. Authorities are reviewing documents he allegedly left at the courthouse outlining his motives.Police said the man first opened fire at a social security office in the Keramikos district of central Athens, injuring an employee. Police who responded to the scene provided first aid before the gunman fled.Later, he was suspected of shooting again on the ground floor of another court building in central Athens, injuring many people.Stratis Dounias, president of the Athens Judicial Employees Union, said initial reports showed that the gunman opened fire on the floor inside the office, slightly injuring at least three female court employees with pellets. Another woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.Alexandros Varveris, head of the National Social Security Fund (EFKA), said the suspect went to the fourth floor of the building and opened fire after warning an employee to take cover. The gunshot struck another worker in the leg. He added that the attacker appeared to have concealed the weapon under his trench coat.Gun violence is relatively rare in Greece, where gun ownership is allowed but strictly regulated.
