Meera Varma, a mental health activist who worked in Joe Biden’s administration, was stabbed inside a Burbank home and her mother, teacher Meera Varma, was killed in the attack. The Burbank Police Department announced the arrest of 30-year-old Sergio Fraire on suspicion of murdering 59-year-old Arti Varma and attempting to murder her 25-year-old daughter. Police have not released the daughter’s name, but ABC7, citing neighbors, confirmed it is Meera Varma, who has worked with Oprah Winfrey, former President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.Arti Varma teaches first grade at Bret Harte Elementary School in Burbank.According to Burbank police, officers were called around 6 a.m. on April 20 to reports that two people had been stabbed at a residence in the 2800 block of North Brighton Street. “Upon arrival, officers located two adult female victims suffering from stab wounds,” the release said. Both were taken to the hospital, where Atty died.Police said they identified Fryer as a suspect after conducting a “comprehensive investigation, including interviewing witnesses, investigating, collecting and reviewing surveillance video,” according to the release. Fryer was found at a home in the 500 block of East Palm Avenue in Burbank.“He was detained without incident and evidence related to the crime was found,” police said.“The relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victim and motive remain under investigation,” the release said.Neighbors say Ati’s husband is currently in India. When asked about her husband’s reaction, neighbor Victor Goli said, “He couldn’t even speak properly… he was crying.” “I was kind of shocked when I heard a few minutes ago that their house had been broken into,” Goli told Eyewitness News. A neighbor said she shared surveillance footage with police showing the suspect leaving the crime scene.
