New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders endured a nightmare in IPL 2026 and are still looking for answers after suffering their fifth defeat of the season. They finished bottom of the table after picking up just one point from a rain-covered match against Kings XI Punjab. The 2024 champions struggled in every aspect including batting, bowling and fielding, with captain Ajinkya Rahane and his teammates in the dugout showing their frustration.Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has made a bold move, predicting a major coaching change amid the team’s decline. He suggested that KKR could turn to their former coach Brendon McCullum next season.“Baz McCullum will be the coach of KKR next season. Bookmark this tweet,” Peterson said.KKR have revamped their coaching set-up ahead of IPL 2026 by appointing Abhishek Nayar as head coach in place of Chandrakant Pandit, but the move has not borne fruit so far. Meanwhile, McCullum is currently the head coach of the England team and has a contract until the 2027 World Cup.McCullum has a long-standing association with KKR, having played for them from 2008 to 2010 and 2012 to 2013. He then returned as head coach from 2020 to 2022 and led the team to the 2021 IPL final.KKR’s woes this season are reflected in the points table. They have yet to win a game, losing five of six, one scoreless game, and have a net run rate of -1.149. Their losses to Mumbai Indians (6 wickets), Sunrisers Hyderabad (65 runs), Lucknow Super Giants (3 wickets), Chennai Super Kings (32 runs) and Gujarat Titans (5 wickets) paint a grim picture of their campaign so far.
What did Rahane say?KKR skipper Rahane admitted it was yet another frustrating defeat but chose to focus on the positives.“It’s not easy to stand up and speak immediately after losing a game. But I want to focus on the positives. We lost three wickets in the beginning and that was tough,” Rahane said after losing by five wickets.“Cameron Green had a fantastic innings, he was under pressure but the way he fought back and took on the bowlers was amazing. 147 runs for 4 and it was a bit difficult for us as a batting unit to get to around 180,” he added.“I still want to give credit to our bowlers. It’s not easy when things don’t go your way, but they kept coming back and pushing hard.”
