In December, a Detroit man was charged with allegedly shooting a Salvation Army bell ringer outside a Kroger store in Westland, Michigan. Rene Miguel Zambrana, 37, is charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm in the death of 47-year-old Alvin Leon Echols. Prosecutors said Zambrana shot Echols outside the grocery store before fleeing the scene.

According to investigators, the shooting occurred at the Kroger restaurant on Ford Road near Central City Parkway. Echols was ringing the bell and collecting donations for the Salvation Army outside the store when he was shot.

Officials with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Echols was shot near a donated kettle but managed to get into the store. He was then shot in the chest and collapsed near the self-checkout area.

Authorities said Zambrana and Echols knew each other, suggesting the shooting may not have been random.

“The actual facts that often arise in cases were not part of the original narrative. It is extremely unfortunate that the focus has been on the random murder of a Salvation Army volunteer during the holidays. The evidence will show that this may have been a complex interpersonal dispute. Nonetheless, these charges are extremely tragic and criminal,” prosecutor Kim Worthy said.
