Phoenix police said Saturday, March 7, that they are investigating the death of a woman found on a canal in the city, Fox 10 Phoenix reported. According to reports, they were called to the area of Plaza 27 and the Grand Canal Trail around 7:40 a.m. local time that morning.

“Details from the call indicated that an adult female was on the nearby canal bank but unresponsive,” a police statement said. “When officers arrived, they located the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.”

DNA update

Authorities recently revealed that DNA on a glove found near Nancy’s home matched that of an employee who worked at a restaurant across the street. However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the restaurant worker was not connected to the investigation.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos Officials have long suspected this might be the case, and dozens of gloves were found randomly near Nancy’s Tucson home, she told KVOA.

“There was some talk and discussion that the police on the scene simply discarded [the gloves]which couldn’t be further from the truth,” Nanos said.

“We knew then and we believed wholeheartedly that these gloves belonged to a restaurant, and guess what? We found out that the owner of the gloves worked at a restaurant across the street. It had nothing to do with the case,” he added.

However, Nanos also explained that other gloves found near the home may have had different DNA matches.

NEW DELHI: As India strives to ensure that children in grade three can read and do basic arithmetic – a core goal of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 – Haryana has reported a sharp shift in learning outcomes (grade-level proficiency) at the government school level. A state-wide “census-style” assessment exclusively accessed by TOI shows that the proportion of high-performing government schools rose from 7% in September to 53% in December last year following targeted remedial measures to address gaps in basic literacy and numeracy.Haryana’s move marks a shift from sample-based assessment to a “census-style diagnostic approach” that measures each child’s abilities individually. The exercise, which covered 4.35 lakh students in nearly 8,600 government primary schools, used a digital teacher-led assessment system under the NIPUN (National Initiative for Reading Comprehension and Numeracy) mission in Haryana.The first assessment, conducted in September 2025, revealed significant learning gaps across the system. Most schools are classified as Category C (the lowest), with less than half of students achieving grade-level proficiency.After diagnosis, each school district designs its own 45-day remediation strategy, grouping students based on ability and targeting specific learning gaps. Peer learning methods are also used to support lower achieving pupils. “Each district has developed its own strategy for 45 days, which also includes helping lower class A students as all students have been mapped,” said Pramod Kumar, NIPUN Haryana program officer.The state repeated the assessment in December 2025, using the same teachers from the first round. “The data has taken a completely significant turn and shows unimaginable progress,” the official said.Learning improvements in literacy and numeracy are evident. The second-level literacy rate increased from 46.5% to 67%, and the third-level literacy rate increased from 44.2% to 61.4%. KOLKATA/RANCHI/BENGALURU: Several opposition-ruled states have launched a scathing attack on the Center over the hike in LPG cylinder prices, with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asking women across the state to stage protests and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign.In poll-bound Bengal, Mamata focused on her party’s female vote bank, intertwining the issue of rising kitchen costs with the issue of removing SIR. She urged women across the state to organize rallies wearing black outfits and carrying utensils to mark Women’s Day to protest against the hike in LPG cylinder prices and the mass deletion of women’s names from the electoral rolls. “Gas prices have increased again, and you cannot order gas before the 21st. So if your home runs out of gas, what will you do on the 21st?” she said at a rally. Siddaramaiah said the rate hike was the result of the Modi government’s “flawed foreign policy.” He said this would put further pressure on millions of households at a time when they are battling relentless inflation. He accused the prime minister of giving up India’s strategic autonomy by “blindly aligning himself with the United States” and undermining long-term energy ties with Russia and Iran. In Jharkhand, JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said, “Had India maintained its earlier ties with Russia, the country would not have faced such a situation.”

Tornadoes cause major damage in Michigan

One of the most powerful storms moved across southern Michigan on the afternoon of March 6, spawning at least one confirmed tornado. The storm moved through Cass, St. Joseph and Branch counties, causing damage about 50 miles between Edwardsburg, Three Rivers and Union City, according to the National Weather Service office in northern Indiana.

Storm trackers, trained observers, broadcast media and public video confirmed that at least one “large and extremely dangerous” tornado was reported near Three Rivers in St. Joseph County.

The heaviest damage occurred Friday night in Union City, Michigan, a town of about 1,700 people just west of Interstate 69, USA Today reported. Homes along the St. Joseph River were destroyed beyond recognition after a powerful tornado struck the area.

The tornado that affected Sanhe struck around 3:50 pm local time on March 6. Storm chasers and emergency managers said the tornado touched down several times before causing damage on the city’s southwest side just before 4 p.m.

Officials said several large structures, including homes and pole barns, were severely damaged or completely destroyed.

Deaths and injuries reported

according to weatherAuthorities reported casualties in multiple communities following the storm.

Union City, Michigan: 3 dead, 12 injured. Three people were transported to local hospitals after the storm moved through the Lake Union area.
Edwardsburg, Michigan: One person dead and several injured.
Okmulgee County, Oklahoma: Two deaths.
Major County, Oklahoma: Two people died Thursday night due to severe weather.

Emergency response and warnings

Emergency crews rushed to the damaged area, and officials asked residents to avoid affected locations so first responders could work safely.

“We’re getting a lot of damage reports, so we don’t have exact numbers to report,” said Maddy Johnson, a meteorologist with the Office of the Weather Service. “We do know that there were several homes damaged on the north side of Lake Union in Union City, Michigan.”

Forecasters also warned that more severe weather, including damaging winds, large hail and possible tornadoes, could continue to affect parts of the South and Midwest.

New Delhi: This can be disturbing news for women who rely heavily on the morning-after pill to avoid pregnancy. Doctors warn that frequent use of emergency contraceptive pills can disrupt hormonal balance and menstrual cycles, warning that the drug is only suitable for emergencies and should not be used as a regular birth control method.Gynecologists say the pill is designed to deal with emergencies such as contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse, but many women are increasingly using it repeatedly for short periods of time.“Emergency contraception is a very useful tool when unexpected situations arise,” said Dr. Aparna Sharma, professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, AIIMS. “But if used regularly, it can cause a variety of problems. It’s less effective than regular contraception, so the chance of pregnancy is higher if you rely solely on emergency pills.”Doctors say one of the most common problems reported by women who repeatedly use birth control pills is interrupted menstrual cycles. Menstruation may be delayed, abnormally heavy, or accompanied by intermenstrual bleeding.“Emergency pills contain high doses of hormones. Frequent use can disrupt ovulation and lead to irregular menstrual cycles,” says Dr. Sharma.Dr Rahul Manchanda, senior consultant, endoscopic gynecology, PSRI Hospital, said the drug may cause some short-term side effects.“Common short-term side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, unusual spotting or bleeding, and irregular menstruation,” he said. “These pills are for emergency use. Frequent or indiscriminate use can disrupt menstrual health and hormonal balance.”Doctors say repeated exposure to hormones may also interfere with ovulation patterns over time, potentially affecting reproductive health.Another concern is that emergency drugs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.Dr Sharma said: “Barrier methods such as condoms remain vital as emergency pills only prevent pregnancy, not infection.”Experts say there is no set medical limit on how much emergency medication can be taken in a month. However, doctors stress that repeated need for them usually indicates the need for a more reliable method of contraception.
