A police officer was shot and killed in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, on Monday. According to reporter Cody Alcorn, the incident occurred near the Hyatt Regency Hotel, where a call came in that someone had been removed from the hotel. The suspect is now in custody.

Alcorn added in a Facebook post, “A witness told me the suspect was handcuffed at the time of the shooting. He was apparently fighting with the officers and had access to a gun.”
The officer is expected to be OK, according to Alcorn.

Several witnesses and local residents reported police activity in the area on social media.
One witness wrote: “We saw all the police coming down Church Street to Betty, wondering what was going on.”
Another added, “My husband met a lot of people on Heywood Road and there was a helicopter overhead. Hope all goes well at the office.”
A third user reported, “Right now in the city center, police are flying everywhere and roads are blocked, it’s crazy! Praying the police survive.”
Another witness commented: “I work downtown and heard all the sirens. Horrible stuff. Praying the police are okay.”
Another added: “I keep hearing the sirens and I’d love to know.”
There were also unconfirmed reports that another officer may have been injured. Authorities have not verified those details.
