New Delhi: Supreme Court Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Friday was asked to examine the allegations of petitioners, relatives of Indians trapped, detained or forcibly recruited in connection with the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A bench of Justices CJI Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said that if the petitioners’ assertion that these Indians were lured to Russia for employment or study by travel agents but were forcibly recruited for war purposes was true, then it was the truth human trafficking. Mehta said it was shocking if true and he would get clarity from the government and respond to the petition. The petitioners stated that “their relatives’ passports and identity documents have been confiscated, their freedom of movement has been restricted, and they have been subjected to threats and coercion… In some cases, they were forced to sign documents written in a language unfamiliar to them and then forcibly enlisted or placed into military institutions linked to the Russian armed forces. “ “The last communications received by their families, mostly between September and October 2025, indicate that the detainees are stationed in or near areas of active conflict, including Kupyansk, Selidov, Markievka, Chelyabinsk and other areas associated with the Russian-Ukrainian hostile war zone,” the petitioners said in seeking instructions from the Supreme Council to the government to bring them safely back home.
