New Delhi: Shubman Gill Despite leading Gujarat Titans to a dramatic one-run victory over Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, he found himself in the limelight for the wrong reasons as the captain was fined Rs 12 lakh for slow and exorbitant rates. The penalty came after Gujarat Titans registered their first win of the season with a thrilling last-gasp goal at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. The IPL confirmed the penalty in a statement and said: “Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill has been fined for maintaining a slow overrate in the 14th match of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.”The press release further added: “As this is the first violation of Clause 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct (which relates to minimum excess violations) by his team this season, Gill has been fined INR 12 lakh.”Thriller wins, but punishment ensuesThe fine somewhat cast a shadow over an otherwise exciting night for the Gujarat Titans. They defended their mettle at 210 and ended up trailing Delhi Capitals at 209/8.When the turning point comes David Miller Denying a single off Prasidh Krishna’s penultimate delivery, two runs were needed off two balls. The gamble backfired when Krishna’s slower ball deceived Miller in the final delivery.A desperate bye attempt ended in disarray when Kuldeep Yadav ran off a hard direct hit from Jos Buttler to seal a dramatic one-run win for GT.Gill’s tactical call paid offGill admitted Miller’s decision gave his team renewed hope in a game that seemed to be disappearing. “Of course, all three games we played came down to the last race, but it was great to get across the finish line. When Miller didn’t score a hit, I thought we had a chance to win,” he said after the game. The GT captain also revealed the thinking behind the final delivery. “We decided whether to go for a yorker or a slow one, but considering the wicket, the slow one is difficult to hit.”Gill thinks the total is slightly above surface levels. “210 on this wicket is 10-15 runs above par and if we bowl well we can win this game,” he added.
