Why the 2027 Social Security COLA could be bigger than expected

0

U.S. Social Security recipients could see a larger-than-expected cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) as rising oil prices tie into 2027 geopolitical tensions Experts say it drives up inflation.

A report in Newsweek stated that oil price Oil prices surge above $100 a barrel amid ongoing conflict Donald Trump and Iran. The surge in oil prices has caused fuel costs to rise more than 20% in a month, raising concerns about wider inflationary pressures.

While current Social Security payments won’t change immediately, inflation trends could affect the size of benefit increases in 2027. More than 70 million Americans rely on these payments, many of whom rely on them to cover basic living expenses.

Inflation and energy costs drive forecasts

COLA is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerks (CPI-W), which tracks inflation in various categories such as housing, food and energy. Energy costs account for about 6.2% of the index, meaning sharp increases in fuel and utility prices could affect the eventual adjustment.

Rising oil prices also tend to drive up transportation and logistics costs, which can make groceries and household items more expensive. If these pressures persist, inflation data could rise further, leading to an increase in cola production.

The previous forecast expected growth of 2.8% in 2027, consistent with the 2026 revision. However, analysts now say that number could reach 3.5% or higher if current price trends continue.

Experts warn against overestimating earnings

Despite the potential for higher payments, experts warn that more cokes don’t necessarily mean improved financial stability for retirees.

“More Coke doesn’t make retirees wealthier,” Newsweek quoted financial expert Michael Ryan as saying. “It usually means the prices of their essentials are rising fast enough that Social Security has to catch up.”

Financial literacy lecturer Alex Beene added that while beneficiaries may welcome the “extra dollars”, those gains could be offset if fuel and grocery costs remain high.

Timetable for final decision

The exact amount of Coke in 2027 remains uncertain. The Social Security Administration’s calculations are based on inflation data from the third quarter of this year, which covers July through September.

This means that the current spike in fuel prices will only affect the adjustment if rising costs continue into the summer. COLA is expected to make a formal announcement in October once relevant data is finalized.

The move follows a major court ruling United States Supreme Courtwhich knocks out most Donald Trumptariff policy. In response, the government has been developing plans to return about $166 billion in tariff revenue to importers who paid duties directly. However, lawmakers said ordinary Americans also deserve relief because they end up bearing the higher costs.

Why new rebates are proposed

Senator Martin Heinrich introduced the Working Families Tariff Refund Act, which would aim to compensate consumers affected by tariff-driven price increases.

“The president may call the affordability crisis a ‘hoax,’ but working-class people are feeling it every time they buy groceries or daily necessities,” Heinrich said in a statement, adding that the legislation aims to return money “to the people who paid for it.”

Economic data supports the argument that consumers are shouldering much of the burden. A study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that “the majority” of the tariff costs fell on U.S. businesses and households, with households estimated to have paid an average of $1,745 in tariffs.

Who is eligible for payment?

Under the proposed plan, the refund amount would depend on income:

  • Up to $600 for individuals earning $90,000 or less
  • Heads of household earning up to $120,000 will receive $600
  • Up to $1,200 for married couples filing jointly with income of $180,000 or less

Families are also eligible for an additional $600 per dependent child. The bill stipulates that, unlike previous stimulus checks, the payments will not include the president’s name.

Other suggestions and next steps

Another proposal from Henry Cuellar also seeks to provide relief, with payments tied to incomes below $400,000 and additional support for each child.

Both measures are still under consideration and will need congressional approval to become law.

The extent of the damage indicates the facility is no longer operational. The attack appeared to be clearly targeted, with no apparent impact beyond the scene in the available frames.

The development comes amid a broader U.S. campaign against Iran that includes counterproliferation strikes, maritime security operations, cyber and electronic warfare efforts, and coordination with allies to reduce Iran’s combat capabilities. As part of these operations, the United States also deployed B-1 bombers using 5,000 pounds of munitions to target threats to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, which transports about 20% of the world’s oil, is affected by ongoing conflicts. Several countries, including the UK, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Japan, have expressed their willingness to support efforts aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.Military assessments based on publicly available data show that Iran’s missile launch capabilities have declined significantly since the end of February. Gulf News reported that a cumulative total of about 1,100 to 1,700 missiles was estimated to have been launched, with an initial surge of more than 400 on the first day, followed by an 86-94% drop by early March to lower daily launches. Analysts said the reduction was indicative of a “harassment-level” capability, with sporadic missile launches likely limited by a reduction in the number of operational launchers and reduced production capacity. Continued U.S. and Israeli air operations are believed to have contributed to the decline. However, risks remain. Iran is believed to maintain a dispersed network of facilities and capabilities, including proxy forces and cyber tools, that could be used for a response below the level of conventional warfare.Meanwhile, Israel launched new attacks on Tehran early on Friday after Iran launched missiles overnight. The Israeli military said its forces “began a wave of attacks on the Iranian terror regime’s infrastructure across Tehran,” AFP reported, without providing further details.Officials cautioned that the assessments were based on publicly available information and could be affected by the “fog of war,” meaning actual numbers could differ. Nonetheless, current trends suggest that Iran’s missile capabilities will continue to decline unless hostilities are suspended.

What is HMPV? Respiratory virus with cold-like symptoms surges across U.S.

0

human case metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a relatively unknown respiratory infection that is on the rise across the United States, prompting health authorities to increase surveillance. Data shared by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that about 5% of positive respiratory cases nationwide in early March were caused by the virus, and wastewater surveillance has also shown increased activity of the virus.

HMPV typically spreads in seasonal patterns, peaking from winter to spring in the United States. (non-splash/representative)
HMPV typically spreads in seasonal patterns, peaking from winter to spring in the United States. (non-splash/representative)

The surge in cases observed since autumn 2025 is a cause for concern because the disease is often associated with common coldwhich is even harder to tell without testing.

Officials said that while most cases remain mild, the lack of a vaccine or specific antiviral treatments has increased concerns, especially among vulnerable populations.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus first discovered in 2001 and belongs to the same family as respiratory syncytial virus. It typically cycles in a seasonal pattern, peaking from winter to spring in the United States.

The virus is spread through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and through close contact such as shaking hands or touching contaminated surfaces and faces, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms are similar to common infections

One of the challenges with HMPV is that its symptoms are very similar to other respiratory illnesses. Patients usually present with cough, fever, nasal congestion and shortness of breath. In some cases, the infection can escalate into a more serious condition, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Dr Tyler B Evans, an infectious disease doctor, told MailOnline that “HMPV is not a serious problem for the vast majority of people outside of these groups.” However, he added that in high-risk groups, “it can develop into lower respiratory tract disease,” particularly in shared living environments.

Who is at higher risk?

Health experts warn that infants and young children, people over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness. Outbreaks in settings such as nursing homes or shelters are particularly concerning because they spread more quickly.

no vaccine yet

There is currently no vaccine or targeted therapy for HMPV. The CDC notes that care is largely supportive and most people recover on their own.

To reduce the risk of infection, authorities recommend basic preventive measures such as frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with sick people, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, and maintaining good indoor ventilation.
