New Delhi: In a massive crackdown on transnational drug syndicates, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a complex drug trafficking network stretching from Nepal to Sri Lanka via India. The multi-state operation, carried out by NCB’s Chennai and Hyderabad zonal units, resulted in the seizure of 77.60 kg of cannabis oil and 2 kg of chalas with a total market value estimated to be around Rs. 10 Crores. Five people, including a Sri Lankan refugee, were arrested in connection with a smuggling gang as part of the government’s ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ (drug-free India) initiative.The breakthrough started on March 3, 2026, when NCB Hyderabad officials intercepted a Tata Safari Storme at the Raikal toll plaza on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway. A detailed search of the vehicle revealed that 2kg of Charas was hidden in the specially made cavity. The two occupants, residents of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, were immediately detained. Interrogation revealed that the contraband was smuggled into India from Kathmandu, Nepal, via the Sonali border. The suspect also admitted that a large quantity of cannabis oil had been transported to Thuthukudi in Tamil Nadu and then transported to Sri Lanka by sea.Acting on this intelligence, NCB Chennai swung into action and seized the remaining consignment in Tamil Nadu, seizing nearly 78 kg of cannabis oil and arresting three more persons. The investigation uncovered plans to use fishing vessels to transport the drugs through coastal waters to recipients in Sri Lanka. with indian coast guardthe authorities intercepted a suspicious fishing boat near the international maritime boundary line, effectively thwarting the attempt to cross the border. In addition to the boat, officers also seized two cars and a motorcycle used by the gang.Preliminary findings have identified a Sri Lankan national residing in Sri Lanka as the key figure in financing and coordinating the entire logistics chain in Nepal. The successful seizure adds to the recent string of wins by NCB Chennai, which has seized over 970 kg of cannabis and other synthetic drugs worth Rs. 125 crore since the beginning of the year. As the investigation continues to trace the network’s financial trail and remaining members, officials are urging the public to report any suspicious activity to the MANAS National Narcotics Hotline in 1933.

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday assured road builders that adequate supply of fuel, bitumen and other essential inputs will be maintained amid concerns over a possible fall in bitumen supply and rise in fuel prices.Expressway builders, in a meeting with NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, pointed out that the prolonged conflict in West Asia could affect project costs and even tolls on stretches where port traffic has a higher share. They also urged highway authorities to declare the current situation as a force majeure event for highway projects to help them prevent revenue shortfall and concession period extension.Officials said the National Highway Builders Federation (NHBF) has raised several issues, including possible increase in basic input prices that could affect the speed of highway construction.“The NHAI chairman said that they are in continuous coordination with IOCL, which has confirmed that fuel and bitumen stocks are adequate and no major supply disruption is expected. He advised contractors to immediately contact the NHAI regional office and field authorities in case of supply disruption,” said a person who participated in the virtual meeting.Yadav assured the developers that NHAI will coordinate with the local administration to ensure uninterrupted supply of materials.Highway developers said they expect transport costs to increase due to rising diesel prices, while rising raw material costs are expected to lead to higher transport charges. They also recommended that NHAI shorten the price indexation lag from three months to one month to better reflect real-time market conditions and prevent under-compensation of contractors.

Canada launches program to provide permanent residency to 33,000 foreign workers. Immigrants should know this
Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab confirmed that Canada has launched a program to convert skilled temporary foreign workers into permanent residence amid concerns about a growing number of immigrants losing their legal status.The scheme aims to grant permanent status to 33,000 workers in in-demand industries within two years. The plan was first announced in November, but government officials have since provided few details. “We’ve launched it,” Diab told The Star in an interview this week. She added: “I can’t tell you exactly how many so far, but we will provide more clarity and more details in April.”Recent government data shows that more than 2.1 million temporary residents’ permits are due to expire in 2025, and a further 1.9 million are expected to lose their status in 2026. The figures raise concerns about a potential surge in the undocumented population.The plan is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s effort to reduce the share of non-permanent residents in Canada’s population to below 5 per cent by 2027, from 6.8 per cent at the end of 2025. Converting temporary immigrants into permanent residents is seen as a key way to achieve this goal. Last year, more than half of the 395,000 new permanent residents were previously in Canada on a temporary permit.“If you are in Canada on a temporary basis, whether as a visitor, student or worker, and for whatever reason you wish to stay longer than that, we recommend that you apply for an extension,” Diab said.She added: “If you don’t apply for an extension, we want you to honor your commitment and leave. We also want to say that even if you apply for an extension, it may be granted or it may be denied for a variety of reasons. If it is denied, we want you to leave as well.”
What is Bill C-12?
Diab also oversees the controversial Bill C-12, which would give immigration officials the power to cancel, suspend or suspend documents and applications in the public interest. “It’s extraordinary power,” she said. Chicago weather update: Thunderstorms causing ground delays at O’Hare; heavy rain, flooding possible
Thunderstorms moved into the Chicago area Friday morning, causing ground delays at O’Hare International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration initially issued a ground grounding due to severe weather, but later downgraded it to a ground delay. Several flights were delayed or canceled as a result.

Increased temperatures were also reported in the area. As of about 9 a.m., fog was forming in the area and the temperature was about 52°F.
Temperatures near O’Hare are expected to rise to around 70°F, while areas closer to Lake Michigan may stay around 60°F.
National Weather Service meteorologist David King said that while temperatures will rise, the chances of breaking warm weather records are diminishing as heavy clouds limit sunlight.
“If we hit this temperature (70 degrees), we’ll tie the record,” King told the Chicago Sun-Times. “We’re still looking forward to a nice warm day, but it’s going to be very wet.”
Some rain may continue into Saturday morning, though forecasters said totals are still expected to be limited.
“But there wasn’t a lot of precipitation,” King said. “It will be a little breezy with gusts of 25-30 mph.”
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-60s on Saturday and the mid-50s on Sunday.
Meanwhile, NBC 5 Chicago Storm Team meteorologist Alicia Roman said storms moving through the area in the morning are expected to “bring a punch” with torrential downpours, thunder and lightning.
“The idea is that the storms should stay below severe criteria this morning, which means we won’t see gusty, damaging winds throughout the morning,” Roman said. “But we could see storms with heavy rain and lightning.”

National Weather Service Advisory
The National Weather Service in Chicago also warned that storms are expected Saturday morning.
“Storms are expected today into Saturday morning. Highest coverage this morning will be approximately northwest of I-55. Storm coverage in the afternoon is uncertain, but some could be severe if storms develop. A significant number of showers/storms will develop tonight into early Saturday morning.”
Delhi Foreign Minister: There is no shortage of funds for development projects and no slack can be allowed
New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday reiterated that there will be no shortage of funds for development works in Delhi and asserted that laxity will not be tolerated.Gupta chaired a review meeting of the earlier approved road and drainage projects and directed the authorities concerned to complete the bidding process by the end of March to ensure that the projects are completed before the monsoon.“The progress of development work must be visible on the ground. So far, three departments have sanctioned development projects worth a total of about Rs 3,786 crore. All agencies must coordinate closely to expedite the completion of pending documents,” the chief minister said.The purpose of the meeting was to review the work of the Chief Minister’s Development Fund (CMDF), Delhi Rural Development Board (DVDB) and Trans-Yamuna District Development Board.“To strengthen infrastructure in the national capital, a large number of projects have been sanctioned under the CMDF scheme. So far, 3,812 development projects have received administrative approval under the scheme with an estimated total cost of approximately Rs 1,798.85 crore,” Gupta said.After the meeting, the Chief Minister said that the Delhi government is taking concrete steps for overall development of villages. “In this direction, the Delhi Rural Development Board has sanctioned 707 projects in various rural areas with an outlay of approximately Rs 1,557 crore.” She also said that in the Trans-Yamuna region, the Trans-Yamuna Development Council has approved 799 projects with an outlay of approximately Rs 430 crore.She added that the projects included construction of roads and drainage systems, water supply-related works, installation of street lights, development of parks and other infrastructure.
