Arrested and facing serious charges

Stephen Bowen, 40, was arrested and is being held at the Broward County Main Jail. He faces charges of premeditated murder and tampering or fabricating physical evidence, records state. The second charge states that investigators believe there may have been an attempt to interfere with or alter evidence related to the case. As of Thursday morning, he remained in custody without bail.

Detained after police search

Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead in her home by police during a welfare check around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Law enforcement later tracked Stephen Bowen to an apartment complex in Plantation, where he was taken into custody. According to Local10witnesses described a heavy police presence. “We just heard a loud bang and I said, ‘Oh my God, was that a gunshot?'” one witness said. “We looked out the window and saw SWAT cars, police cars, everywhere, guns drawn.”

Case considered domestic violence

According to ABC NewsAuthorities said the case is being investigated as a “domestic violence incident.” Police Chief Brad Mock confirmed that police found the deputy mayor dead in her home after receiving a call to check on her well-being. Officials have not released further details about the cause of death.

His wife is a prominent community leader

Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38, was first elected in 2020, becoming the first Black and Haitian-American woman to serve as Coral Springs commissioner. In 2024, she was re-elected and later appointed deputy mayor. Before entering politics, she worked as an environmental scientist helping to respond to major hurricanes.

Her family mourns her death

Her family shared a emotional information on social media. “While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we know her as a sister, a daughter and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room.”

They added, “Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape, but also in the countless lives she impacted.”
