According to People magazine, Nancy was shot and killed just three months after her brother committed suicide.

“On behalf of our entire family, we are deeply saddened by the passing of my beloved sister, Nancy Metayer-Bowen. She was not only a cherished member of our family, but a dedicated public servant who dedicated her life to improving the lives of others,” the post read.
The post added, “Throughout her years in public office, she led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering sense of purpose. She believed in bringing people together, listened to those she served, and worked tirelessly to create positive change in her community. To us, she was a source of strength, wisdom, and love—a person who always put others before herself.”
The post added that while others saw Nancy as a “leader and advocate,” her family saw her as a “sister, daughter and friend who filled every room with warmth and laughter.”
The statement added: “Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape, but also in the countless lives she touched. We are grateful for the outpouring of support and kindness shown to us during this difficult time. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her extraordinary life and the lasting impact she left behind.”
