In one video, a street interviewer asked a protester a sarcastic question, asking “if it was a little homophobic that we were so focused on the Strait of Hormuz and not the gays in Hormuz.” The woman responded: “Yes, I agree. Yes, of course… they’re going to the Strait of Hormuz, but they’re not willing to protect the gays in Hormuz. That’s not cool.”The phrase “the gays of Hormuz” is fictional, a play on words referring to the strategic waterway. However, protesters seemed to see it as a real problem and even tried to offer a historical explanation for the discrimination. The video quickly went viral. Dinesh, an Indian American, uses it to comment on cultural identity and assimilation. He posted onIn a split-screen video, as the viral video played, he elaborated further: “So, someone at the ‘No King’ protest asked this activist a very ‘straightforward’ question. The media, the elites, the progressives, that was the America she knew, and she accepted all of its clichés and all of its prejudices. “Some internet users questioned whether the woman was of Indian ancestry since her ethnicity was not confirmed, while others defended her, saying she showed empathy, albeit against a chaotic backdrop. People criticized D’Souza by name, pointing to his own immigrant background and accusing him of hypocrisy. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, with about one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments passing through it. Currently, the situation is very tense due to the ongoing friction between the United States and Iran. There are concerns about potential disruption, military posturing and threats to shipping lanes. Any escalation could impact global oil prices and trade. In short, it is a serious geopolitical flashpoint with real consequences for the global economy and security.
