Sandhu Ponnachan, a 36-year-old Indian citizen, has been charged with a number of serious offenses after a car plowed into pedestrians in Derby city center, injuring seven people.According to the BBC, Bonaquin faces six counts of GBH with intent, one count of GBH with intent, dangerous driving and possession of a bladed article.Prosecutors said the evidence was sufficient and it was in the public interest to pursue the case.The incident occurred at around 9.30pm on March 28 at Friar Gate, a busy street in Derby city centre. Police say a black Suzuki Swift veered onto the sidewalk and hit pedestrians, causing panic in the area. Witnesses said emergency services heard loud bangs and screams as they rushed to the scene near the Bishop Bryce pub.Seven people were injured, including four men and three women, aged between 36 and 52 years old. However, the injuries were not life-threatening and several victims have been discharged from hospital.

Bonaquin was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and later formally charged. Police clarified that the incident was not being treated as terrorism and there was no ongoing threat to the public, although counter-terrorism officers were providing assistance as a precaution.Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred said the incident had “sent shockwaves through the community” and urged the public to avoid speculation that could affect the case. Authorities are also appealing for CCTV, dash cam or mobile phone footage to assist investigations.

Bornakan is originally from India and has been living in the Alvaston area of Derby for several years. He was arrested minutes after the incident and was produced before the Magistrates Court. During the brief hearing, he confirmed his personal information and showed no emotion. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Derby Crown Court on April 29.
