Taylor-Allen’s path to a medical career is unusual. After graduating high school as one of the top students, she earned her undergraduate degree at Southern University connecticut State University. However, like many future doctors who later realize their passion, she had to establish a solid academic background in the sciences.
She then pursued post-baccalaureate and master’s degree programs at Quinnipiac University, an important step in facilitating the transition from ambition to medical school eligibility.
While preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), she encountered challenges, including needing to retake the test. Her final score was around the 73rd percentile, showing progress and perseverance. For many candidates, the MCAT is a significant hurdle; however, her journey highlights a broader truth. Success in medicine is rarely a smooth road, and tenacity is often as important as initial results.
Howard University: A turning point in her journey
Her acceptance into Howard University School of Medicine was a major milestone.
After earning her medical degree, Taylor-Allen participated in the highly competitive residency matching process. She successfully secured a position in the anesthesiology department at Yale New Haven Hospital, where she had previously worked behind the scenes. In the United States, residency placements are assigned through a national matching system that comprehensively evaluates candidates and considers academic merit, clinical experience, interviews, and recommendations.
