India defeated Pakistan 3-0 in the opening Group B match of the SAFF U20 Championship on Thursday with a dominant performance to seal their place in the semi-finals with one match remaining. Forward Omang Dodum scored twice in the second half, scoring in the 64th and 88th minutes after Vishal Yadav had given India the lead as early as the third minute. The win ensured a perfect start for the Indian team and ensured their progression to the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Pakistan were knocked out of the tournament on a losing streak after losing to Bangladesh earlier. India will take on Bangladesh on Saturday in a match that will decide the top spot in Group B. India got off to a positive start and almost opened the scoring within two minutes. Vishal Yadav broke down the right wing and delivered a threatening cross for Dodum, but the chance was slim. Soon, the first goal came. Gurnaj Singh Grewal spotted Yadav’s run and drove a high ball over the defence. Yadav was in good control and saw his initial shot blocked, but he reacted quickly to convert the rebound with his left foot at the near post. The early breakthrough boosted India’s confidence, although Pakistan gradually settled into the game and started testing the defence. They came close to equalizing twice, but were denied by goalkeeper Suraj Singh Ahaybam, who made two crucial saves. India capitalized on missed opportunities in the second half and doubled their lead with a quick counterattack. Samson Ahongshangbam took the ball out of defense and passed it to Rishi Singh Ninthoukhongjam. Then, Rish passed the ball to Dodum, who beat goalkeeper Zulgunan and headed the ball home. India took control of the proceedings with a two-goal advantage while Pakistan looked for a reply. India’s defense remained in order, limiting further threats. In the final stages, Mohammad Junaid fouled Prashant Jajo in the penalty area, leading to referee Virenda Rai awarding a penalty kick. In the 88th minute, Dodum stepped forward and scored twice to seal the victory. This convincing win provides India with a strong boost in their final group match against Bangladesh.
