Bengaluru professor who proposed to students was earlier banned from campus and harassed others

NEW DELHI: A professor at a suburban Bengaluru medical college has been accused of sexual harassment after he allegedly re-entered the campus despite being banned and proposed to a female student in the classroom, an incident that later turned violent. The incident took place at a private medical college in Nelamangala taluk on March 23 and came to light after a video of the proposal was widely shared on social media, police said. In one clip, the assistant professor addresses a class and claims a student confessed her “feelings” to him. He then proposed to her in front of his classmates and handed out chocolates. The student immediately objected, questioning when she had ever expressed such feelings, and asked him to report the matter to the principal. The professor insisted she had told him “I love you” and claimed there was CCTV evidence, prompting her to demand he produce it. He then left the classroom, saying he would talk to her the next day.According to the FIR, the professor has faced complaints from students over alleged misconduct and sexual harassment. The college has launched an investigation and banned him from campus pending the outcome.Despite this restriction, he allegedly breached the order by entering the premises on March 23. The complaint alleges that he “forcibly held” the student’s hand and engaged in lewd and inappropriate behavior that caused distress to the student and disrupted the academic environment. After the classroom exchange, tensions quickly escalated. The video shows the student again confronting the professor, hitting him with his slippers, while other students joined in, shouting insults and allegedly assaulting him.Based on a complaint by the university’s principal, police have registered a case against the professor under sections of the Indian Act relating to assault, sexual harassment and criminal trespass. Authorities said further investigation is ongoing.
