Sheridan Gorman Loyola student killed in Chicago shooting: 5 things to know when police make an arrest

Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old freshman at Loyola University Chicago, was shot and killed and has been arrested. Detectives were questioning a person of interest Saturday morning, according to Chicago police.

According to arrest records, the suspect is a 25-year-old Rogers Park man, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Gorman was shot in the head in the early morning hours of March 19 while walking with friends near Toby Prints Beach, near Loyola Chicago’s Lakeside campus. Authorities said a masked gunman opened fire on the group before fleeing the scene.

1. What’s happening around Loyola’s campus?

The shooting occurred around 1:15 a.m. while Gorman was with a group of friends near the beach pier, according to police and university alerts.

A masked suspect opened fire, killing Gorman as she tried to escape. No other injuries were reported.

Gorman was shot in the head and died at the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot followed by screams, and the suspect running away immediately after the attack.

2. Sheridan Gorman is a freshman at Loyola University

Gorman, who is originally from New York, recently started her freshman year of college, and classmates described her as positive and enthusiastic about campus life.

At Thursday night’s funeral, acquaintances revealed that Gorman was a member of Cru, a Christian campus club, and a business student at Loyola University.

3. Gorman was shot and killed while out late at night

According to police, she was on an outing with friends when the gunman suddenly opened fire.

Gorman’s family said in a statement Saturday morning before the suspect’s arrest that she was out with friends on Thursday trying to observe the Northern Lights.

4. Police identified suspect because of his limp

A surveillance video showed the suspect shooting Gorman in the head and walking toward Pratt Avenue, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The publication reported that police identified the suspect “in part” by a “visible limp” seen on surveillance footage.

The final clue to the identification was that the suspect next entered a nearby apartment building and appeared on the building’s interior security cameras without wearing a mask.

5. The suspect has been accused

Publications such as the Tribune are still not naming the suspects because they have not been charged.

However, they reported that according to Cook County court records, the defendant was charged in June 2023 with a misdemeanor for shoplifting at the Macy’s store on Dow Street.
